A Glimpse Into History
- Founded in 946, Havelberg’s roots run deep. Originally established by Otto I as a bishopric, the town was destroyed during the Slavic uprising of 983 and reclaimed during the Wendish Crusade of 1147.
- By 1150, St. Mary’s Cathedral began construction, becoming one of the oldest ecclesiastical sites in the region.
- By 1359, Havelberg joined the Hanseatic League, thriving on the commerce of its riverbanks until its departure in 1559.
